Ali began his career predominantly in criminal work and now practices in several different areas of law throughout the South-Eastern Circuit and further afield.
Crime
Ali specialises in all areas of crime. He regularly defends clients in the Crown Court on charges relating to violence, weapons, sexual violence, drugs, fraud and theft. He has also conducted numerous successful appeals against conviction and sentence, as well as full confiscation hearings.
Ali has substantial experience at all levels of the criminal justice system. He has defended multi-handed robberies in the Youth Court and has also represented youths accused of section 18 wounding and of supplying class A drugs. He has defended in several summary trials which have each involved evidence from over 15 witnesses, in trials relating to significant public order disturbances, in trials with both young and vulnerable witnesses, and has defended clients with mental health difficulties. His inclusion on the CPS External Advocates list for London has allowed him to gain experience in prosecuting.
Immigration and extradition
Ali has a burgeoning immigration law practice, which originally stemmed from using his criminal law experience in deportation hearings. He now frequently conducts appeals in the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal in asylum, immigration and deportation cases, and advises on High Court and Court of Appeal proceedings.
He has a great deal of experience in extradition law, and has been instructed in numerous full hearings involving complex points of European Human Rights law and voluminous expert evidence.
General civil law
Ali retains an interest in civil law from his role acting for banks and financial institutions before joining Chambers. He has appeared in the County Court and High Court in matters of insolvency, and has acted in matters of civil litigation, landlord and tenant disputes and highways law.
Ali is bilingual, speaking Farsi (Persian) to a native standard; he is also fluent in German and speaks French to a conversational level.
