European Court of Human Rights rules on the extradition of two men to the US to face life without parole sentences: Craig Harris was led by Mark Summers in Harkins and Edwards v the UK, arguing that Joshua Edwards  extradition to the USA to face a "life without parole" sentence would violate Article 3 of the European Convention.  The judgment is notable for overruling the House of Lords decision in R (Wellington) v SSHD [2008] UKHL 72 on the correct approach to art 3 in extradition cases. The Chamber gave judgment on 17th January 2012.  Download the ECHR press release here.
