Furnival NewsRichard Hearnden and Chloe Fordham secured the conviction of Antony Imiela, the "M25 rapist", following a trial at the Old Bailey. Antony Imiela was convicted in 2004 of a campaign of rapes in and around London earning him the moniker the "M25 rapist". Following a cold case review by the Metropolitan Police, he was brought to trial this year in respect of an allegation of rape made in 1987. Imiela was linked to the offence using more modern DNA techniques not available at the time. Having discovered that the victim had since died, Imiela claimed that the intercourse was consensual. The victim's statement was read to the jury, her family gave supporting evidence and after considerable legal argument the jury was allowed to hear of Imiela's previous convictions. Imiela gave evidence protesting his innocence but was convicted by the jury and received a 12 year sentence. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-17445780 Furnival Chambers are delighted to congratulate Charles Sherrard on his thoroughly deserved appointment as Queen's Counsel in 2012. The new Queen's Counsel announced today will formally become Silks when they make their declaration before the Lord Chancellor at the ceremony on 30th March 2012. The judgment is notable for overruling the House of Lords decision in R (Wellington) v SSHD [2008] UKHL 72 on the correct approach to art 3 in extradition cases.
